Inn's
Pousada Lagamar
The Pousada Lagamar is located in Ilha Grande, at Araçatiba's
shore: one of the most beautiful and well-preserved areas of the
Island. Are also located in this shore other famous beaches,
like: Vermelha (red), Itaguaçu, Araçatiba Pequena (little
Araçatiba), Araçatiba Grande (big Araçatiba) and Longa (long),
among other paradisiac places, like: Lagamar, Lagoa Verde (green
lagoon), Saco dos Micos and the wonderful Gruta do Acaiá (Acaiá's
Cave).
Distant 150m from Praia Vermelha and Praia Itaguaçu, The
Lagamar, scenery that lends its name to the Inn, is a coastal
area in which huge pebbles form an uneven natural pool, with
white sand in the botton and tiny rocks covered with corals, all
over it. There you will find fishes, crustaceans, mollusks,
turtles and other life forms, looking for natural refuge. Round
about this very place is located the Pousada Lagamar.
The Pousada Lagamar is very much like a typical Brazilian house.
The Restaurant functions like the close contact and
sociabilization center. This is the place where all the five
natural senses can be explored, through a good meal.
The Ilha Grande beachcomber cuisine makes use of a variety of
native spices, which satisfy the most demanding palates.
Whether it is in the tasty and diversified breakfasts or in the
unforgettable candlelight dinners, the nature sounds are a
constant. The ocean cry, the birds and cicadas' simphony, the
toads' croak and other animals' songs, directed by Mother Nature,
compound the musical theme of the Pousada Lagamar.

The Island
Ilha Grande
The topping vegetation of Ilha Grande is a part of the remaining
dense woods from Mata Atlântica, and is a Nacional Patrimony
protected area (article 228º, incise VII, Paragraph 4º). It is
under jurisdiction and protection of the Rio de Janeiro State.
The local fauna and flora are very diversified. We find mountain
range vegetation there, as well as coastal, mangrove and prairie
areas. It’s inserted in the ecological zone known as Mata
Atlântica, in which there is predominance of dense ombrofila (from
low ground, submountains and montains). In small proportion we
can find the pioneer formation areas, with marine influence (shoal)
and fluvial-marine (mangrove), one of the most important
ecosystems (responsible for maintanance of biodiversity),
performing direct influence in local economical fishing
activities.
Biodiversity
Many local fauna and flora representative species are found in
the area, including parrots, woodpeckers, Brazilian thrushs,
saracuras etc. There are also different kinds of monkeys,
squirrels, armadillos, pacas, hedgehogs and snakes.
Some extinction threatened species, like de Alouatta Fusca,
generally known as Bugio monkey, are also find there. The whole
Ilha Grande is in a Tamoios Environmental Protection Area and
subdivided in 3 more especific areas:
State Park, Marine State Park and Biologial Reserve of Praia do
Sul.
Biologial Reserve
It was created in 1981 and is administered by the State
Fundation of Engeneering and Environment. It encompasses 3.500
hectars, which form a rectangular area, from Drago to Parnaióca
and also through the mountain slope (fountain divisors).
State Park
It was created in 1971 and is currently administered by the
State Institute of Forest. It encompasses 4.500 hectars, which
form a triangular area, among Abraão, Lopes Mendes and Parnaióca.
The Park is a public domain area, protected by law with the
purpose of making possible the pacific gathering of man and
environment.

History of the Island
In a forgotten Paradise among the cities of Rio de Janeiro and
São Paulo, there is a refuge where the nature still remains
intact and the sea botton presents beautiful surprises to the
divers.
Imagine an Island where cars and roads don’t exist. Just beachs
and more beachs, some of them completely deserted and bathed by
waters of an emerald-green color.
The access to them is through trails, inside of a tropical
forest almost untouched. Coming down of its wonderful mountains,
you will find small creeks with crystaline water, which form
waterfalls and unforgettable scenerys. Imagine the multicolored
fishes, the huge variety of sea life and much more…
This is Ilha Grande: a paradise with many stories to tell.
Many centuries ago it was a pirate refuge; today it is a refuge
for foreign navigators, who come in their sailboats and are
overthrown by the charm of the island.
In the Island, the way of life is as simple as fishing… It makes
us think if the life in big cities is worthy living. The Island
was discovered in 1502, by the Portuguese navigator André
Gonçalves. In that time it was inhabited by Indians “Tamoio”,
which were already experienced in the underwater hunting style,
so well known nowadays. It was registered by the german Hans
Staden, who published his work in 1557.
Priest Anchieta, the famous Brazilian Indian’s catechizer, also
registered the presence of the Tamoios in the Island. According
to his reports, there were about 150 inhabitants, living in 6
tents. They were valiant warriors and hunters.
Ilha Grande represents a historic role, of international
distinction. It was the scenary for piracy episodes, slaves
traffic and merchandise smuggling, all of them occurring among
the centuries XVI and XIX.
It was also an important point of supply, because it had
abundance of mineral water and firewood. When the “Gold Cicle”
started, in the state of Minas Gerais, the island became a slave’s
traffic center, especially when slavery was prohibited, in the
XIX century.
From its bays, countless corsaries attacks to the Portuguese and
Spanish fleets – which distributed the extracted riches of the
American colonies to Europe – had begin. The presence of French,
English and Dutch people was an important factor in the heretic
native feature.
Ilha Grande started to be colonized in 1725, when the first
sugar and alcohol manufacturers got established. Years later
they would convert their lands in coffee farms. During that time
a huge amount of forest got cut to generate cultivation areas.
In the second half of the XIX century, the coffee consumption
decline and the end of the slave trafficking activities
introduced the beginning of the local economical decadence.
During the period in which D. Pedro II was the emperor, a place
was constructed to give shelter for the ship passangers who had
developed cholera and other kinds of infections, during their
nautical trips.
This work contributed for the development of the Abraão Village,
which latter started to be known as Angra dos Reis. In 1903 it
was installed the penal colony of Dois Rios, which was first
designed to receive low-periculosity prisoners.
In 1940, the penitentiary was reformed to shelter political
prisoners, among them, some famous names like Graciliano Ramos,
Orígenes Lessa and also the revolutionaries Flores da Cunha and
Agildo Barata. The only road connecting Vila do Abraão and Dois
Rios was built by the prisoners themselves.
From 1954 on, the penitentiary started receiving common
prisoners again and also political prisoners from the Second
World War. Its name was then changed to Cândido Mendes.
This transfer ocurred because the Fernando de Noronha island was
yielded to the American government, to be used as a air/naval
base.
The Cândido Mendes was deactivated in 1994 and demolished during
the Brizola regime. In this same period the tourism started to
increase in the area.
The professional fishing is an economical local activity that
involves a good part of the island population. Some of the most
important nucleus are: Proveta, Araçatiba, Praia Vermelha,
Matariz, Longa and Aventureiro. During the 30’s some japonese
descendants brought to the island a fish salting process, which
was proven vital for the dwellers. The introduction of the
process itself was made by Greek people.
Until the 70’s there were something like 10 fish salting
factories in the island. With the decline of the fishing
industry, many of these factories were converted in Inn’s. The
decline is still a problem noticed in the area, especially in
function of the predatory fishing, an ilegal but very common
practice among some dwellers. In such practice, some fishermen
use nets capable of getting virtually every size of fishes, wich
surely mean that many non-mature fishes are also caught. Despite
that, there is also the comercialization difficulty.

Leisure in the Island
Enseada de Araçatiba
It is formed by many interconnected beaches of rare beauty,
among them: Praia Grande de Araçatiba, Praia de Araçatiba,
Itaguaçu and Praia Vermelha. In the bigger one is located the
village, which has the tourism as its main economical activity,
especially during the summer. It is the second more bustling
touristical spot of Ilha Grande and the starting point for many
ship excursions, as well as ecological hikes.

Diving
Araçatiba is surely one of the better options for free style
diving in the whole Ilha Grande. Whether it is round about the
beachs or in more remote places, its cristaline waters
unblindfold the beauty of the local oceanic scenery, including
an enormous variety of marine especies. It’s an amazing and
unforgettable espectacle!

Trekking
For those who like jogging or hiking, many local trails lead to
the bech. Some are short, others long and others very steepy.
Besides the pleasure of knowing different beachs in the cove, in
the hikes you will be able to admire sylvan animals as well as
the exuberant beauty of places like Mata Atlântica, Praia Grande
de Araçatiba, Praia Longa, Praia Itaguaçú, Praia Vermelha, Gruta
do Acaiá, Proveta/Aventureiro. The whole island is
interconnected by trails; some of them are easy, while others
require a better physical conditioning to be surpassed.
Nautical Sports
Thanks to its location, directed to the continent, Araçatiba
offers an awesome space for nautical sports. In its calm waters
the visitor can practice ski, windsurf, wakeboard, jet ski, etc.
Schooner excursions
There are many wonderful options of schooner excursions,
allowing you to know beautiful beachs, with the most varied
characteristics, as well as other small islands. Some of these
excursions are better known, like the ones to the beachs of
Lopes Mendes, Enseada de Abraão, Freguesia de Santana, Lagoa
Azul, Lagoa Verde, Gruta do Acaiá, Praia do Aventureiro e many
other diving practice points.
The Night
The night in Araçatiba offers a very romantic atmosphere, with
many options of entertainment. The visitor can have a good time
while listening to good music, participating in local parties in
the beachs and seashore musical events. There is also the choice
of organizing taylor-made events, if previously ordered by your
group.
Diving points - Ilha Grande
There are many diving options in Ilha Grande. The whole coastal
area, especially the bay inner part, offers excellent conditions
to dive. There are contless flagstones, parcels and shipwrecks,
which give refuge to an intense and diversified sea life.
The water temperature vary from 18 to 25ºC. The average
visibility rate is 10m in a normal day and 20m in very hot days.
The most distinct diving points are:
Laje da Matariz
Lacated in the road to Enseada do Sítio Forte. In this place
there is a large occurrency of very diversified aquatic
life-forms. It offers wonderful conditions for diving. We find
there, in the sands that cover the botton of the site, the rests
of an old helicopter, which knocked down in 1998 and was taken
to that place for the Navy.
Boqueirão da Longa
A very sheltered place, with very diversified aquatic life-forms.
The limit between the stones and the sand is 7m deep. In the
sandy botton it’s possible to find flounders, lizzard-fishes and
rays. All over the small stones you will find beautiful colored
fishes. In this same place you will find a 9-meters deep stone
formation, inhabited by very rare fishes and crustaceans.
Naufrágio do Pinguino
This is the shipwreck spot most visited by divers. The Pinguino
still has a structure in very good state of conservation,
allowing the visitors to enter its structure. The ship is landed
18 meters-deep in the botton. The shipwreck ocurred in 1966.
Naufrágio do Califórnia
This old steamship sunk in 1866, in Praia Vermelha. It’s landed
some 8 to 15 meters deep in the botton and is almost completely
covered by sand. The place is excellent for diving adventures
and can be reached directly through the beach, being not
necessary the use of boats.
Laje Branca
A small flagstone, round about Praia Vermelha. In this place you
will find a huge variety of fishes and colonies of chorals. It’s
an outstanding place for nocturn diving; its botton is some 15
meters deep.
Gruta do Acaiá
This cave’s entrance is some 6 meters deep. As soon as you pass
the entrance, there is a salloon, interconnected with the
surface. It’s possible to leave the water on that spot. The
scenary is completely touching, especially because of its
blue-coloured predominance. In the cave there is a huge amount
of squirrel-fishes, friar-fishes and salemas. You can also reach
this place by land.
Praia e Ilha dos Meros
The right side of the Praia dos Meros is a pleasant place for
diving. As you get further from the beach, its depth vary from 3
to 10 meters. There is predominance of lizzard-fishes, rays,
flounders and multicolored fishes. Close to this place there is
an island also named Mero. That’s a spot very frequented by
turtles and other rare ocean life forms.
Laje do Guriri
In this place there is a huge cave, with many entrances. The sun
beams pass through the cracks, forming light sheafs and creating
a visual espectacle. The interior of the cave itself is very
small, giving refuge to 10 divers, at the most. It’s considered
one of the best diving places of the Island. Its depth reachs
18m, in the sand.
Ilha das Palmas
Located in the north entrance of the bay of Ilha Grande, this
island has a beautiful coast. You can find sea urchin, sea stars
and red gorgonias. Eventually, you will also find schools of
anchoves and bonitos. Its depth reachs 15m, in the sand.
Ilha Do Pau a Pino
One of the 360 existing islands, in the bay area. It’s small and
isolated, what makes it a good option for those who come from
Itavuruçá or Mangaratiba. In some periods of the year it has
clear water, which represent a natural espectacle. Its depth
varies from 0 to 18m of average. There is a considerable amount
of pelagical fishes. So, keep your eyes wide open!
